Friday Sector Laggards: Technology & Communications, Industrial


Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Friday, shares of Technology & Communications companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 1.1% loss. Within that group, Super Micro Computer Inc (Symbol: SMCI) and Palantir Technologies Inc (Symbol: PLTR) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 5.0% and 3.7%, respectively. Among technology ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLK), which is down 1.5% on the day, and up 23.94% year-to-date. Super Micro Computer Inc, meanwhile, is up 12.70% year-to-date, and Palantir Technologies Inc is up 360.69% year-to-date. Combined, SMCI and PLTR make up approximately 1.9% of the underlying holdings of XLK.

The next worst performing sector is the Industrial sector, showing a 1.0% loss. Among large Industrial stocks, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (Symbol: NCLH) and Quanta Services, Inc. (Symbol: PWR) are the most notable, showing a loss of 3.0% and 2.5%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Industrial stocks is the Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI), which is down 0.9% in midday trading, and up 18.40% on a year-to-date basis. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, meanwhile, is up 27.45% year-to-date, and Quanta Services, Inc. is up 49.56% year-to-date. PWR makes up approximately 1.2% of the underlying holdings of XLI.
